A Bittersweet Homecoming

Well, dear Spackleonians, the fateful day has finally arrived. Exactly 6 months after my first day of work at Atlantic Theater Company, I have reached my last day of work at Atlantic Theater Company (that also means that it's been 6 months + 2 days since I graduated from Heinz). Tomorrow morning I'm Amtrak-ing it out of here, back to Paris of the Appalachains, the Queen of Cities, my dear, beloved Pittsburgh.

I have to say, I'm really looking forward to being back at home. It's going to be great actually living at home for a little while. I never thought I'd say that, but the truth is that I really need that time at home without having to sleep on someone's floor or pay through the nose for a crappy sublet. This will also mark the first time in over 6 years that my mom, dad, sister, and I will all be living in the same home together (not counting school breaks, which is more like visiting than "living").

It will be rather bittersweet, however, because in many ways I've already started thinking of Hoboken as "home." Which is interesting given the fact that I haven' stayed anywhere in Hoboken longer than 2 months, more than half of my time here has been spent sleeping on an air mattress on the floor, and in no instances have I been staying at a place of my own. Nonetheless, that's where I've started thinking of as home. And now I'm leaving. Probably not forever, but I'll definitely miss it.

It seems that my life is just constantly on the move these days, which I guess isn't a terrible thing. I've learned that I don't have an excessive attachment to a stable home or lots of material possessions (which is probably useful preparation for a hoped-for job in touring). And there's certainly no harm in being adaptable. I can't deny, however, that it will be really nice to be at home and to sleep in my own bed.

In any case, that's all I have time for, as it's my last day at work and I'm writing this on my lunch break. I have 9 hours on the train tomorrow, and the Amtrak website promises me that there's Wi-Fi, so I may be able to post another update as I travel.

Keep calm and carry on.

  1. Hey Alex,
I just found your blog and wanted to say that, as someone who has just moved back home, I know exactly what you mean. This is also the first time in a long time that myself and all my siblings will be underneath the same roof. I suppose I'll be following along now...carry on.

Oh yeah, and I agree about the trains. I'll take 8 hours on a train over 40 minutes on a plane any day.
